Restoring Heritage Elegance: A Tale of Timeless Transformation by Sussex Sash

Darren Willmott • Jul 19, 2023

In October 2023, prompted by glowing recommendations from neighbours, friends, and fellow tradesmen, the client engaged Sussex Sash to provide a bespoke quotation aligned with their specific requirements. The objective was to tastefully enhance their property, restoring it to its original historical charm.

This comprehensive project encompassed the meticulous processes of restoration, replication, and renewal, focusing on both doors and windows. Drawing inspiration from an antiquated postcard depicting the property's original design, the client applied their own expertise in property design, product finishing, and engineering to contribute to the realisation of their vision.

Upon receiving the green light to proceed, the outdated PVC windows on the upper floor were replaced with Accoya wood timber sash windows. These were meticulously crafted based on the original design captured in a local black-and-white postcard. The choice of the "Farrow & Ball Mizzle" satin tone for the finish and colour, as requested by the client (M & D), proved to be an astute decision, lending prominence to the newly installed glazed joinery.

On the ground floor, Accoya wood sashes were replicated and retrofitted into the existing boxframes, which underwent concurrent repair and restoration. Staying true to the inspiration derived from the historic postcard, new Accoya double-glazed sash windows were designed and retrofitted into the bay window, with modifications to the existing opening. Notably, one of the two bay windows was transformed with the addition of French double doors, meticulously crafted from Accoya timber. Special attention was given to ensuring these doors harmonised with the original postcard's depiction, incorporating considerate and sympathetic modifications to the existing timber and stone aperture. The result was a captivating centrepiece that seamlessly integrated into the historical aesthetic.

The client expressed immense satisfaction with the final outcome, commending the progress of the work and appreciating the punctuality and high standards maintained by Sussex Sash. Their unwavering endorsement, coupled with a commendation for our 'on-time' work ethic and standards, reaffirms Sussex Sash's commitment to delivering exceptional craftsmanship and client satisfaction.
