At Sussex Sash, we recently had the pleasure of working on a stunning restoration project in Cowes, where our client sought to replicate their original doors and restore the property’s beautiful bay windows.

The doors had succumbed to rot, but their historical significance made them an important feature to preserve. We were more than happy to take on the job of replicating these ornate elements while restoring the property's charm.

Replicating the Original Doors

We began by carefully surveying the original doors, capturing every detail to create precise drawings for our client’s approval. Using Accoya timber, renowned for its durability and resistance to the elements, we replicated the doors to ensure they would not only match the original design but also stand the test of time. For added protection and aesthetic appeal, we applied a two-tone waterborne coating, blending modern finishes with classic design. ( What is a Waterborne coating ?)

One of the most distinctive features of this project was the intricate internal trim, which our client wished to preserve. So, we carefully removed the trim and set it aside for reinstallation after fitting the new doors. Once the old, rotten doors were taken down, we installed the replicated ones, requiring only minor repairs to the external masonry.

Restoring the Bay Window

In addition to the door replication, we restored a magnificent four-part bay window in the same room. This ornate window had seen better days, but with expert craftsmanship, we brought it back to life. Like the doors, the window was finished with the same two-tone coating, ensuring longevity while maintaining the property's original character.

We were extremely pleased with the final result. The combination of newly replicated doors and restored windows perfectly complemented the original features of the home, preserving its historical integrity while enhancing its functionality.

Seaview Refurbishment Project - Sussex Sash Tackles Major Decay

Mrs F H, reached out to Sussex Sash during lockdown & requested for us to take on the restoration, refurbishment & finishing of the glazed joinery to the family home in Seaview.

Sadly, we were unable to take on the project within that season and many more months of decay followed, with more rot and decay taking hold.

Mrs F H eventually reached out again, and we were contracted to undertake the full refurbishment, repairs and finishing to all the external glazed joinery items at the property. This involved major repairs to almost every item, sending all the windows back to our workshop for stripping of the failed paint, applying splice and bond repairs where necessary and completing with full finishing. Major repairs were also needed to the single box frames and bay windows; there were dozens of joinery items on this project.

The property’s unique style needed a two-tone paint finish, both internally and externally, which were colour matched as originally specified.

Other remedial works were requested to be completed to the flat roofs and external apron, as we were on site and had full access equipment erected, we were happy to undertake these additional works for efficiency and longevity.

As expected, the project was completed on schedule, resulting in a happy customer, and giving many more years of life to the original restored sash windows and external doors to the property.

We met all of the project needs and provided detailed communication with photos and videos during the works.

Mr. Darren J Cool, CEO, and Mr. Tim Wander, Historian & Project Manager of Northwood House, reached out to Sussex Sash seeking expertise in the repair and replacement of the windows in the South East Ballroom. This particular space boasts breathtaking views of Northwood Park and the Solent, making it a focal point for events and celebrations.

The Initial Survey Visit

The journey began in 2022 with an insightful visit to Northwood House. Tim Wander, our guide through the historic property, provided a glimpse into its past and ongoing restoration efforts. Despite the ongoing improvements, it was evident that neglect from previous custodians had taken its toll on the estate.

The focus of our attention during the survey was the South East Ballroom windows. Years of wear and tear had rendered them beyond practical repair, necessitating complete replacement. Notably, one of the two bay windows was transformed with the addition of French double doors, meticulously crafted from Accoya timber.
